Used to Jacobs club biscuits, always ate the chocolate first. Sometimes if lucky there was an extra thick chocolate end bit !

For my sins, I spent several years running the advertising for United Biscuits, including McVitie's and Jacobs. They were far from the easiest of clients.

Those who made the biscuits demonstrated considerably more skill than those who marketed them. Eventually I let slip this opinion - to a fairly senior individual in a moment of abject frustration - and was soon moved off to run other accounts (Renault and Army Recruitment - both much more fun).

It was the only time in my fifty year career I was moved on.

A little while later, The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work by Alain de Botton came out.

In this excellent book, which I heartily recommend, he spent time with McVitie's as an observer for one chapter. I was amused to find that he agreed fully with my analysis!
